Ten weeks seems like such a long time, until you only have three weeks left...
Today was my last day in the bird department at Cairns Tropical Zoo. When I first started my internship, I was expecting to spend three weeks in each department (mammals, birds, and reptiles) but sometimes plans change! Instead of transitioning to the reptile department this week like I originally intended, I spent an extra week with my feathery friends and will return to the mammal department next week. I've learned so much in both departments, so I made the decision to do extra time in each so I can continue to build upon the skills I've gained so far.
It's funny how much one's skills can improve in a month's time. I really feel that my last few weeks in the bird department made me grow as a keeper. I was given responsibilities that required independence, something that's important in any internship or job. That said, THANK YOU to the amazing bird department staff for allowing me to help with tasks in a way that was beneficial to my learning, and also useful to the team! Internships like this are the ones that will help me land a job in the future.
I've worked at a very large zoo, and now I've worked at a fairly small one. Even though my time in the bird department is over, it doesn't mean I have to say goodbye. The perks of a little zoo is that I'll still see the fabulous birdos (what the bird keepers are called at CTZ) and their birdies around the park! :)
